This week, CCAH President Geoff Brown of USA Properties and CCAH Executive Director Jenna Abbott had the valuable opportunity to meet with Secretary Xavier Becerra in San Francisco. CCAH was joined by our fellow housing advocacy organization, the Housing Action Coalition, to discuss the state of housing in California and the challenges ahead as we approach the upcoming gubernatorial election. The meeting provided an important opportunity to reinforce CCAH’s role as a trusted voice with deep expertise in affordable housing finance and a strong understanding of the barriers standing in the way of meeting our housing goals.
During the conversation, we emphasized the critical need to expand housing supply at all levels, both market-rate and affordable, while also safeguarding existing affordable units. We highlighted the importance of ensuring that working families, seniors, and vulnerable communities can find stable, affordable homes. The discussion focused on advancing practical, results-driven strategies that remove unnecessary obstacles, support development, and enable construction at the scale required to meaningfully address the crisis. With housing affordability continuing to be one of California’s most pressing challenges, the leadership of the next governor will be pivotal in determining whether progress is accelerated or stalled.
As a candidate, Secretary Becerra demonstrated a willingness to engage with housing stakeholders and thoughtfully consider the realities of development constraints across the state through a pragmatic, collaborative lens. While the CCAH PAC has not yet made an endorsement in the governor’s race, we are actively evaluating our options and will share an update once a final decision has been reached. In the meantime, our voter guide is a helpful resource for understanding our current endorsements ahead of the November general election.
