The California Council for Affordable Housing is thrilled to announce our official endorsement of Eleni Kounalakis for California State Treasurer.
We chose to back Kounalakis not only for her stellar public service record but for her tangible accomplishments in real estate development in California’s Capitol City of Sacramento, CA. As President of AKT Development Corporation, Kounalakis led the company through its largest expansion, spearheading the development of affordable and middle‑class communities that now house over 200,000 families in the Sacramento region.

“California’s housing crisis demands urgency and serious financing solutions, and I’m honored to have the support of the California Council for Affordable Housing. As Treasurer, I’ll be a steady partner in accelerating affordable housing production and preservation, protecting renters and first-time homebuyers, and ensuring public dollars deliver real results.”
Eleni Kounalakis
In addition to serving two terms as California’s Lieutenant Governor, Kounalakis chaired boards overseeing public university systems and state lands, and brought diplomatic and fiscal experience from her tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Hungary. Whether in the boardroom or on the global stage, her work has consistently focused on expanding opportunity, housing, and addressing affordability challenges.
During her fireside chat with Executive Director, Jenna Abbott, at the CCAH 2025 Fall Conference, Kounalakis shared insightful perspectives on the role of fiscal policy in advancing affordable housing and economic resilience. She echoed member strong support of the work done by the Treasurer’s staff and confirmed a desire to see those functions continue to be housed inside that Constitutional Office. Her comments resonated deeply with CCAH members, emphasizing the connections between finance, community investment, and affordability.
“Eleni’s blend of real‑world housing development experience and public stewardship is unmatched. Her unique background—as both a developer who has built homes for hundreds of thousands and a public leader overseeing billions in public assets—makes her the ideal champion for California’s fiscal future. She’s our pick!” said Jenna Abbott, Executive Director, CCAH
CCAH is currently planning events designed to support our chosen candidates. Stay tuned for more information on those early in 2026.
