The California Council for Affordable Housing (CCAH) proudly endorses Malia Cohen for State Controller. Cohen’s record of fiscal leadership and her commitment to affordable housing align with CCAH’s mission to strengthen California’s communities through safe, accessible homes.
“Malia Cohen has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fiscal stewardship and equity.” said Jenna Abbott, Executive Director for the California Council for Affordable Housing. “Over the past several years, she has advanced policies that support housing development and economic opportunity for all Californians.
“Affordable housing is essential to California’s economic strength and to the well-being of our communities. I’m honored to earn the support of the California Council for Affordable Housing and grateful for their leadership in bringing public and private partners together to deliver quality, affordable homes for Californians who need them most.”
Malia Cohen California State Controller
As Chair of the State Board of Equalization, she led efforts to modernize California’s property tax system and used property tax abatements to stimulate affordable housing. Since becoming State Controller in 2023, she has further championed transparency—auditing government agencies and ensuring accurate financial reporting across counties and public pension funds—all while advocating for housing affordability at every turn.”
Controller Cohen has made meaningful change to the way California operates. She was a driver behind AB 2353 which eliminated costly delays in welfare tax exemption processing, enabling affordable housing developers to defer payments during construction, reducing financial burdens and speeding up housing delivery. In addition she serves on numerous boards, including the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee and California Debt Limit Allocation Committee.
CCAH’s endorsement highlights the belief that competent financial leadership is essential for addressing the housing crisis. Cohen’s track record demonstrates not only sound financial foundations but also a dedicated focus on ensuring that public resources serve Californians in need.
